In Apple's product update plan, those products that have not yet been updated in 2024 and early 2025 are very likely to usher in a new transformation and meet the public in the second half of this year. 1. iPhone 17 Air
According to The Information, Apple plans to launch a new iPhone 17 model with a "significantly thinner" design. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the device, which may be called the "iPhone 17 Air," will allegedly undergo a "major redesign" that may include a single rear camera located in the center of the top of the device, and a narrower dynamic island. However, there are rumors that the battery thickness is about 6mm, which means the thickness of the device itself will exceed this number.
For reference, Apple's thinnest iPhone ever was the iPhone 6, which was 6.9mm thick, meaning the iPhone 17 "Air" might not be much different from the 2014 flagship model. The device is rumored to have a 6.5-inch display and could replace the iPhone 17 Plus model, but that has yet to be confirmed. Other potential features include an aluminum body, an A19 chip, an Apple-designed 5G modem, and an improved iPhone Front Camera.
2. Rectangular Camera Bump: iPhone 17 Pro Series
It is rumored that the iPhone 17 Pro models will adopt a new rear design that combines aluminum and glass. The upper part of the back will be made of aluminum and feature a "rectangular camera bump" made of aluminum instead of traditional 3D glass. The lower part will still be glass to enable wireless charging.
Although Apple has been using iPhone glass back covers since the launch of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X in 2017, earlier iPhone models (except the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 5C) all use aluminum back covers. In addition, according to The Information, the aluminum camera bump on the iPhone 17 Pro will be larger than previous models.
3. New All-aluminum Design: All iPhone 17 Models
Apple is reportedly planning to return to an aluminum body for all devices in the iPhone 17 series. The two flagship iPhone 17 Pro models will mark the first return to an aluminum frame for high-end iPhones since Apple began distinguishing between Pro and non-Pro models. In recent years, aluminum frames have been reserved for low-end devices such as the iPhone SE and iPhone 16, while high-end models have used stainless steel frames until the iPhone 15 Pro introduced a titanium frame as a major upgrade. This shift in materials for the iPhone 17 series marks a unified approach, with aluminum frames returning across the entire device range.
4. 120Hz ProMotion (Always-On Display): iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus
Apple plans to expand ProMotion to all iPhone models in 2025, allowing all models to increase to a 120Hz refresh rate when necessary for smoother scrolling and video content. Previously, only the "Pro" models in Apple's iPhone series had this feature. The upgraded 48-megapixel telephoto lens on Apple's largest high-end device is expected to be optimized for use with Apple's Vision Pro headset. This will make the 2025 "Pro Max" the first iPhone whose rear camera system consists entirely of 48-megapixel lenses, allowing it to capture more photographic details.
7. Apple-designed WiFi 7 chip: iPhone 17 Pro Series
Apple's high-end models in 2025 are expected to be equipped with Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chips for the first time. Wi-Fi 7 support will allow "Pro" models to send and receive data through 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands simultaneously through supported routers, resulting in faster Wi-Fi speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connections. 8. Scratch-resistant Anti-reflective Display: All iPhone 17 Models
According to a rumor, the iPhone 17 will feature an anti-reflective display that is more scratch-resistant than Apple's Ceramic Shield on the iPhone 15 series. Although the new iPhone 16 Pro models do use the latest generation of Ceramic Shield, whose advanced formula is 2 times stronger than the glass on any other smartphone. But the outer glass of the iPhone 17 is said to have a 'super hard anti-reflective layer' that is more scratch-resistant. It is not clear whether Apple plans to adopt the Gorilla Glass Armor used by Samsung in its Galaxy S24 Ultra, but the description of Corning's latest technology is consistent with this rumor.
9. 24MP Selfie Camera: All iPhone 17 Models
According to rumors, the iPhone 17 series will be equipped with a 24MP front camera and a six-element lens. For reference, the iPhone 14 and 15 are equipped with 12MP front cameras and five plastic lens elements, and this year's iPhone 16 series is also equipped with the same hardware. The resolution of the iPhone 17 is upgraded to 24MP, and the photos can maintain their quality even when cropped or enlarged, and more pixels will capture finer details. Upgrading to a six-element lens should also slightly improve image quality.
10. More Memory: iPhone 17 Pro Series
At least one model in Apple's iPhone 17 series will come with 12GB of memory. Jeff Pu of investment firm Haitong claims that both Pro models will come with upgraded RAM, while Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that only the iPhone 17 Pro Max will come with 12GB. In contrast, another reliable source claims that all iPhone 17 models will have 12GB of RAM.
For comparison, the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus come with 6GB of RAM, while the iPhone 15 Pro models come with 8GB of RAM and all iPhone 16 models come with 8GB of RAM. Any such increase would allow for better multitasking on the iPhone and provide additional resources for Apple Intelligence features that require large language models to reside in memory.
11. A19 Processor: All iPhone 17 Models
Apple typically upgrades the iPhone with faster and more efficient chip technology every year. While the iPhone 17 series is not expected to adopt TSMC's next-generation 2nm chips, Apple's A19 chip technology is likely to be built on an upgraded 3nm process. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are expected to be equipped with A19 Pro chips, while the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air may be equipped with standard A19 Chips.
TSMC is developing the N3P process, which is expected to start mass production at the end of 2024, so Apple is expected to use this chip technology in the iPhone 17 series. Compared with earlier versions of 3nm chips, N3P chips can provide higher performance efficiency and higher transistor density.
12. Smaller Dynamic Island: iPhone 17 Pro Max
Jeff Pu said that Apple's highest-end iPhone in 2025 will adopt a narrower dynamic island, thanks to the device's Face ID system using a smaller "super lens". Traditional iPhone cameras use curved lenses to redirect light to the image sensor, while super lenses are thin, flat lenses etched with microscopic patterns that can focus light more precisely. Assuming that this will result in a narrower dynamic island, it will be the first time Apple has changed the feature since it was introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022.
